****UPDATE: September 13: Suspect facing sex trafficking charges

NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston, Massachusetts has confirmed that the heavy-set man captured on surveillance video leading 17 year-old Brittany Thompson out of the Medfield Public Library is behind bars and facing a number of charges, including child sex trafficking.

He’s been identified as 30 year-old Stephen Ardrey who is also facing federal charges of traveling with a minor for the purposes of sex, after allegedly taking Brittany across state lines to a Super 8 Motel in West Greenwich, Rhode Island.

The girl’s father, Michael Thompson, summed up just how close a call this had been when he said, ‘I think that in a matter of days Brittany would have been in a place where we never would have got her back. It’s terrifying. It’s terrifying and again but I am also fortunate. I feel very fortunate.’

****UPDATE: 05:00 PM / 17:00 EDT: Brittany found safe in Rhode Island

NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston, Massachusetts is reporting that missing teen Britanny Thompson has been found safe, walking down a street in Coventry, Rhode Island on Thursday. 

The developmentally-disabled teen had apparently agreed to meet a man she met online and police believe the pair may have spent the last few days at a house in nearby Greenwich, Rhode Island.

WHDH reports police in Coventry say a motorist spotted Brittany walking with a man in the breakdown lane of a road Thursday morning.

“The person she had seen walking may be Brittany Thompson. We sent our officers out there and confirmed that was the case, ” said Chief Bryan Volpe,Coventry, R.I. Police Department. Right now that man is not being charged with a crime. Police say this remains an open investigation

“We have a lot of discussion to do with her yet,” said her father Michael.

Last seen leaving the Medfield Public Libray with an unknown man

Massachusetts State Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing teenage girl who has been missing since Monday, September 9th.

Brittany Thompson is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. She has braces and was wearing a red sleeveless shirt, blue jeans and flip flops. Police say Brittany is developmentally delayed was last seen on surveillance videotape leaving the Medfield Public Library on Monday.

Medfield Police Chief Robert Meaney told CNN that the video shows that she seems to walks out of the library voluntarily. “This is not an abduction, no crime of any sort,” Meaney continued. “Right now, we have a girl who walked out of the library with an unknown guy and we are trying to figure out who he is.”

Although the current situation is not deemed criminal, the state police said, “We have reason to believe Brittany Thompson is endangered.” in their statement.

Meaney said that Thompson’s parents do not know the man in the surveillance video from the library.
